The homeowner’s wet rear yard was not a minor inconvenience — standing water for extended periods after rain events was causing turf die-off, creating mosquito habitat, and making a substantial portion of the yard unusable. A conventional drain-and-pipe solution would have moved the water problem to a downstream location; the homeowner specifically wanted an on-site infiltration approach that would manage the water within the property.

Solution
J&J Services designed a rain garden system with a naturalistic aesthetic — sized to handle the calculated runoff volume from the contributing drainage area — positioned in the lowest point of the rear yard where water naturally accumulated. A small fieldstone retaining wall was constructed upslope of the rain garden to slow and direct sheet flow from the upper yard into the garden’s inlet zone. The rain garden was excavated to depth, amended with a permeable soil mix, and planted with a Brandywine-appropriate native plant palette including native sedges, ironweed, cardinal flower, and blue flag iris — plants selected for their tolerance of periodic inundation and their ecological value to the watershed. The surrounding yard was regraded to direct flow to the garden rather than spreading across the lawn.

Results
The standing water problem in the rear yard was resolved completely within the first growing season. The rain garden established strongly, and the homeowner reported that the planted area had become one of the most visually interesting parts of the property by mid-summer.
